Devlog #2 - Once Upon A Time

Story update

For the past couple of months I've been working almost exclusively on the story for the final game.

The challenge here is to tell a cohesive story through audio recordings and documents, while also ensuring an engaging puzzle layer to it.

To this end I took a pragmatic approach by first focusing on the puzzles and then figuring out a story on top. Right now, it looks like this:

Some explanations:

  • Green boxes represent audio recordings
  • Orange boxes are documents
  • Red boxes are abstract deductions that you can use to figure out characters in other recordings
    • i.e. you always hear something jingling when this particular character is in a recording
  • White boxes with red outlines are simple self-evident deductions used locally in a recording
    • i.e. a character introducing himself/herself by name
  • Green lines are the intended deductions of characters in a recording based on another resource (recording, document or abstract idea)
  • Blue lines are related to a feature of the game not yet present in the demo and out of scope for this post. Will talk about it when it's ready.

I'll do the counting for you. There are:

  • 25 audio recordings
  • 14 documents

This is in no way intended to be 100% final but it's a pretty good starting point. The plan over the next couple of months is to make the story playable from start to finish and playtest it.

In closing I'll leave you with a couple of screenshots of the new recordings I'm working on (WIP).

Cheers!
